I’m Jumping Head First into the 30 Days of Improv QAL, Join Me!

For the month of August I am going to be doing the 30 Days of Improv QAL which is being cohosted by Shannon Fraser Designs and Broadcloth Studio. You can also watch all the fun on Instagram with the hashtag #30daysofimprovqal.

This post is going to be dedicated and updated for my journey with the Improv QAL. I am going to use this space to show you my daily progress and thoughts about what I did. I am also doing a video series over on my YouTube channel.

I decided to try this because I work with patterns so much and I wanted to challenge myself with thinking outside the box. I’ve got quite a few solid fat quarter colors that are perfect for this type of challenge too.

So let’s dive in to this year’s QAL!

FINAL DAY – Free for All!

This week I am working with the color palette called Peridot. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of greens from Confetti Cottons.

Today we were given the tip to work with negative space, since this is an Improv block, I did a Free For All. I just worked with the knowledge I gained and made my last Improv curved block. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/xHU4BFJSSns

Week 4 – Day 4 – Slice & Dice!

This week I am working with the color palette called Peridot. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of greens from Confetti Cottons.

Today we were given the tip to make some curves and then slice them up to see what we get. As I have done in the previous weeks, I do quite the slice and dice job. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/QwWyAKYIqEw

Week 4 – Day 3 – Big Humps!

This week I am working with the color palette called Peridot. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of greens from Confetti Cottons.

Today we were given the tip to try using big humps with our curves. This was so far my favorite type of curves to do and it shows in my finished block. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/jCCm73gNYmI

Week 4 – Day 2 – Curves and Small Pieces!

This week I am working with the color palette called Peridot. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of greens from Confetti Cottons.

Today we were given the tip to try using smaller pieces with our curves. I wasn’t sure what this meant.. and also my finished block is 5.5″ so I tried, but it is difficult to convey a curve in that small a block. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/1GG7hNASvvk

Week 4 – Day 1 – Curves!

This week I am working with the color palette called Peridot. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of greens from Confetti Cottons.

Today we were given the tip to just cut some curves and get used to cutting them and sewing them. I watched one of the cohosts videos on how to cut the curves and it really helped out and I use the technique in my video also. Week 3 – Day 5- Free For All!

This week I am working with the color palette called Amethyst. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of purples from Bella Solids.

Today the tip was to utilize all the triangular shapes, but I have been doing that. So today for me was like a free or all and I just let it happen. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/BYOI5erikMU

Week 3 – Day 4 – Obtuse and Scalene!

This week I am working with the color palette called Amethyst. It is a fat quarter bundle that I got and it is a range of purples from Bella Solids.

Do you remember your geometry class days?? Today we worked with obtuse and scalene triangles. I explain those typs in the video! You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/-krGZdSvqwY

Week 3 – Day 3 – Embrace the Wonk!

Today our tip was to embrace the wonk and cut different sized triangles and see what we end up with. . You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/ux2kAoT3T6w

Week 3 – Day 2 – Triangles!

Today our tip was to just cut some triangles, but make them smaller. Smaller triangles were tricky because of the angles and the shrinking of the fabric with all the seams! Still fun and a beautiful block. You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/ENPc2CSqX_Y

Week 3 – Day 1 – Triangles!

Today our tip was to just cut some triangles and get used to working with them. So that is what I did and I had so much fun! You can watch my video progress for this block here – https://youtu.be/MVeUj-y-CQE

Week 1 – Using Stripes and Rectangles and Scissors and/or Rotary Cutters

Day 1

Day 1 was the first time I have ever done this and I was very nervous to start cutting my fabric. I just started cutting random strips and a rectangle and it just kind of blossomed from there. I just kept working with what I had to get something big enough to cut a 5 1/2″ square block out of the center. Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/_ywGiKVVfWI

Day 2

Day 2 I wanted to push myself to make some diagonal lines. I cut more wonky shaped strips and rectangles, sewed them together and then cut pieces from those sewn units. I cut my block down a few times and reused the cuts to mix things up and got a beautiful looking block! Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/_v_t_FPaqxY

Day 3

Day 3 I wanted to push myself to make some strips and cut from that block of strips! I made my strips and then cut against or with the strips to start building out my block. Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/1WwmyXOjFn0

Day 4

First week is squares and rectangles. Not so nervous anymore and I wanted to start with a single square and work out from there. Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/mMjCurWLx94

Day 5

On Day 5 I decided to use up the scraps that were created from Day 1 – 4.. I just started cutting and adding some strips until I can to this beautiful block. Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/KlzEuqGAErc

Week 2, Day 2

This week we are working with Polygons and today’s tip was to pick a polygon and work with smaller shapes and see where it leads you! Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/zHkCOdcO2_Y

Week 2, Day 3

This week we are working with Polygons and today’s tip was to embrace the Wonk! With polygons that is pretty easy to do because the angles are not square! Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/5O-c4Ch2b9s

Week 2, Day 4

This week we are working with Polygons and today’s tip pick a polygon, work around it and then cut it up and put it back together! Check out my video progress – https://youtu.be/EcVzb20NQvE
