Unveiling September 2026's Quilting Subscriptions

What's in the Box?

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a What’s in the Box day around here, and I had quite the pile of quilting mail waiting to be opened!

The August Sew Sampler has been delayed, but Fat Quarter Shop sent the September Sew Sampler early, so I decided there was no reason to wait any longer. I also had two Cherrywood Fabrics subscriptions, a Primitive Gatherings Quilt Box, a finishing kit I’d ordered, and something especially fun this month: fabric I actually WON from Hawthorne Supply Co.!

Most of these packages were still a complete mystery to me, which is half the fun of opening them with you. So grab your favorite drink, settle into your sewing room, and let’s see what was hiding inside this epic quilt-mail pile!

🧵 Primitive Gatherings Quilt Box

🎃 Purrs & Boos Quilt

The featured project is Purrs & Boos, a 54″ x 65″ Halloween quilt filled with rows of playful pumpkins.

The box included two Purrs & Boos 5″ Charm Packs containing the prints needed to make the pumpkins. You’ll need to add approximately four yards of background fabric to finish the quilt. Primitive Gatherings used Graphite Bella Solids for its version.

I’ve already used this collection for the Fat Quarter Shop mystery quilt and received more in my Spooky Box, but I still love it. The pinks are especially unusual for me because I’m generally not a pink person, yet somehow they completely work in this collection.

And this looks like a fairly straightforward quilt to put together.

🇺🇸 Americana Quilt Along

I also received another batch of red, white and blue fat quarters for the ongoing Americana project.

I’m holding off on assembling more of mine because the fabric cuts have been fairly close, and I wanted to see what arrived in this box before moving forward. Hopefully I’ll have an Americana progress update to show you during my next box opening.

🪵 Handmade Ruler Box

One of my favorite surprises was a little 2″ x 4″ box handmade from a ruler!

Scotty at Primitive Gatherings made these specifically for subscribers. It’s designed to hold bobbins, clips, needles and all those tiny sewing-room treasures that somehow never seem to have a permanent home.

It’s cute, useful, handmade, and definitely something I wasn’t expecting to find inside the box.

And, of course, there were caramels. Those get shared with my husband after dinner!

My Thoughts

I continue to think this box offers an excellent value. For around $45 every two months, you receive a generous amount of fabric, an exclusive project, and patterns that I genuinely look forward to sewing.

🍒 Two Cherrywood Fabrics Subscriptions

I had not one, but two Cherrywood Fabrics subscription packages waiting for me this time.

If you haven’t seen me open these before, Cherrywood’s subscription sends different selections of their beautiful hand-dyed fabrics. The amount and cuts can vary from month to month, so I never really know what I’m going to find inside.

And that’s precisely why I enjoy opening them!

Wild Cherry Hand-Dyed Fabrics

The first package contained two yards of Wild Cherry, with approximately a yard of each color.

These are wonderfully irregular hand dyes with twists, blotches, streaks, swirls and variations throughout the fabric. Some areas are lighter, others darker, and the texture almost gives the appearance of suede or leather.

The purple in particular is gorgeous.

I’m putting these fabrics aside for my Nocturnal Nook Block of the Month. It’s a very detailed foundation paper pieced project, and I think these Cherrywood fabrics are going to work beautifully in it.

Four More Hand Dyes + Microtex Needles

The second subscription included four half-yard cuts, giving me another two yards of Cherrywood.

This group contained some much-needed lighter neutrals along with a beautiful green and fabrics with subtle purple streaks running through them.

There was also a bonus from Microtex: five 80/12 Microtex Sharp needles and a pocket guide explaining which needles to use and when. Since I go through plenty of needles, that’s a bonus that will definitely get used!

September 2026 Sew Sampler: Autumn Awaits

Now for the big one!

The September 2026 Sew Sampler theme is Autumn Awaits, and this box was HEAVY.

Once I started pulling everything out, I understood why. This month’s box was packed with fabric, some substantial new clips, a pattern, pins, a needle minder, and the next Spooled Quilt Along block.

And if you’ve been following these reviews, you know I like to compare what I actually paid with the retail value.

💰 September Sew Sampler at a Glance

My Cost including shipping & taxes: $37.35
Retail Value: $110.32
Value Above What I Paid: $72.97
Retail Value vs. My Cost: approximately 295%

This was a VERY good value month!

What's Included in Sew Sampler

🍂 Birch & Willow Charm Packs | $38.94 Value

First out of the box were three Birch & Willow Charm Packs by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda Fabrics.

This is their first fall collection, and the palette is gorgeous: soft ivory, warm gold, pumpkin orange, charcoal and gray mixed with daisies, ginghams, dots, pumpkins and stripes.

I particularly love the tiny gingham!

The three charm packs have a combined retail value of $38.94, which means the fabric alone was already worth more than I paid for my entire Sew Sampler box.

And these fabrics coordinate with the featured Harvest Stars pattern, so this month’s box really feels like a complete fall project rather than a collection of unrelated products.

🧵 Quilty Clippings | $22.98 Value

This may have been my biggest surprise in the box.

The Quilty Clippings by It’s Sew Emma are heavy-duty fabric clips featuring six colorful quilt block designs. Each clip can hold up to 30 layers of fabric, and they have a textured grip that makes them comfortable to use.

I already have the blue Alpha Clips from a previous Sew Sampler box, and I’ve even made my own numbered clips that I use while working on Farmer’s Wife Fridays.

Sometimes, though, I don’t need letters or numbers. I just need something that will hold a stack of fabric together.

I tested one of these on an entire stack of charm squares during the video, and it handled it! These feel much sturdier than the little clips I normally use, which can break if I try to cram too much fabric into them.

Retail Value: $22.98

I didn’t even know these existed before opening the box, and that’s one of my favorite things about Sew Sampler.

🎃 Pumpkin Harvest Enamel Needle Minder | $12.98 Value

Look at that little pumpkin!

The Pumpkin Harvest Enamel Needle Minder by Sherri & Chelsi coordinates perfectly with the Birch & Willow collection. It features a pumpkin surrounded by golden flowers and green leaves.

I have accumulated quite a few needle minders, but I actually use them. When I’m hand-stitching binding, I keep one nearby so my needle has a safe place to land instead of disappearing into the sewing-room Bermuda Triangle.

Retail Value: $12.98

❤️ Clover I Sew For Fun Heart-Shaped Pins | $6.48 Value

Next were the I Sew For Fun Heart-Shaped Pins by Clover, valued at $6.48.

They have large, flat heart-shaped heads and are designed to be easy to grip for piecing, pressing and machine stitching.

I rarely use pins while I’m actually sewing because I usually reach for clips instead. But I do use pins on the felt board behind me to display blocks while I’m filming.

Because these are thinner than some of the decorative pins I’ve received in other boxes, I think that’s exactly where these might find their home in my sewing room.

⭐ Harvest Stars Quilt Pattern | $11.98 Value

The featured pattern this month is Harvest Stars, designed by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life exclusively for Fat Quarter Shop’s Sew Sampler.

And this one is really pretty.

The stars and nine-patch blocks give the Birch & Willow fabrics plenty of room to shine, and I love how the dark charcoal works against all those warm autumn colors.

The finished quilt measures approximately 49½” x 57½”.

I also answered a question in the video that I get about Sew Sampler patterns: most of the included quilts aren’t queen-size quilts. They’re generally somewhere between table-runner and lap-quilt size.

But don’t let that stop you! A pattern like Harvest Stars uses repeating blocks, so if you want a larger bed quilt, you can simply make additional blocks and add the fabric and background yardage needed to increase the size.

Retail Value: $11.98

🐝 From the Vault: Beehive Quilt Pattern

This month’s From the Vault pattern takes us all the way back to May 2018 with the Beehive Quilt Pattern.

The original version used Pepper & Flax and includes both lap and twin-size options. The lap version measures approximately 47″ x 61″, while the twin finishes around 61″ x 82″.

It’s another repeating-block design, so it’s easy to see how the pattern can grow depending on the size quilt you want to make.

And spoiler alert: I decided right there during the video that Beehive is going into this month’s giveaway!

🧵 Spooled Quilt Along Block #6: Cranberry Fluff

We also received Block #6, Cranberry Fluff, for the ongoing Spooled Quilt Along.

If you’re wondering what happened to Block #5, you’re not alone! I had the exact same thought while filming. Block #5 is in the delayed August box, so it hasn’t arrived yet.

I’m making my Spooled blocks from my own stash, particularly reds and pinks that I don’t normally reach for. The blocks finish at 9½”, and so far they haven’t been difficult to put together.

Once that delayed box arrives, I’ll be able to fill in our missing Block #5.

Fat Quarter Shop September 2026 Sew Sampler

💛 Was the September Sew Sampler Worth It?

The June 2026 Sew Sampler was another excellent box from Fat Quarter Shop. Between the beautiful Scenery fabric collection by Elizabeth Hartman, the two quilt patterns, quality notions, premium thread, and bonus extras, there was a great mix of inspiration and practical quilting supplies. I especially enjoyed seeing the coastal color palette and getting another update on the Sew Sampler Vault celebration.

My total cost for this month’s box, including shipping and tax, was $37.35. The included items had a total retail value of $95.36, making this month’s box an outstanding value and one of the strongest Sew Sampler boxes I’ve received. If you enjoy discovering new fabrics, trying exclusive patterns, and building your quilting supplies each month, Sew Sampler continues to be a subscription I can confidently recommend.

🎃 I Won Coven Fabric from Hawthorne Supply Co.!

We’ll start with something a little different because I won fabric!

I’ve subscribed to the Hawthorne Supply Co. newsletter for years, going all the way back to when I remember them as Hawthorne Threads. They regularly include giveaways at the bottom of their newsletters, and while I enter from time to time, this particular giveaway immediately caught my attention.

It was Coven by Robin Pickens, and I wanted this one!

Then I opened the next newsletter, scrolled down to see who had won and there was my name. After all these years of entering, I managed to win the Halloween collection I actually wanted. 🎃

Coven by Robin Pickens

This was my first time seeing Coven in person, and the color palette is what really grabbed me. There are haunted houses and all sorts of Halloween motifs, but there are also some unexpected colors.

That periwinkle blue is especially fun. It’s not a color you see very often in Halloween collections, and I think it could make for a really unique Halloween quilt.

Do I know what I’m going to make with it yet? Absolutely not! 😂 But this one is staying in my sewing room, and I’ll definitely show you what it eventually becomes.

Final Thoughts

This really was an epic quilt-mail day.

I got to open two beautiful Cherrywood subscriptions, add another Primitive Gatherings project to the pile, discover some genuinely useful new Sew Sampler notions, and somehow win the exact Hawthorne Supply fabric giveaway I wanted!

And yes, apparently Purrs & Boos has decided it lives at my house now. 🎃🐈

The September Sew Sampler was probably the standout for me. I loved the autumn palette, and with $110.32 worth of products for the $37.35 I paid, the value was hard to beat.

Now I want to know what you thought.

What was your favorite thing I opened this month? And if you received the September Sew Sampler, did you like this box as much as I did?
