🎃 Halloween Quilt Projects, Swaps & Spooky Sewing Fun!
👋 Hey quilting friends! Carrie here from Canary Quilts. It’s been a couple of weeks, and my sewing room has turned into a Halloween haven! This is one of my favorite times of the year to sew — full of pumpkins, ghosts, and spooky inspiration.
Today, I’m sharing several Halloween-themed quilt projects, swaps, and works-in-progress — plus a new 3D appliqué quilt that’s just boo-tiful!
🧵 My Halloween Swap Quilt
This year I joined a Halloween swap hosted by Amy Friend at During Quiet Time.
Each participant made two blocks to exchange, and my group had ten quilters — seven from the U.S., one from Canada, and one from the U.K.
When I finally stitched all the blocks together, I was amazed at how adorable it turned out! It’s the perfect little table quilt filled with creativity from quilters around the world.
Amy’s book Intentional Piecing includes the Tell Me a Story block, which is great for fussy cutting those cute Halloween centers. I’m already hoping she does a Christmas swap next!
🌙 The Nocturnal Soul Quilt Along
I’ve also been sewing along with the Nocturnal Soul QAL, hosted by Snug and Stitch.
This quilt-along has been so much fun — a mix of spooky themes, paper piecing, and creative challenges!
A few of my recent favorite blocks:
-
🧪 Potions & Notions by Snug and Stitch
-
🕯️ Guiding Light by Andrea Foley from The Fabric Foundry
-
🐦 Kilber’s Raven by Nik Knott from Vogonverse Quilts
I even won a $50 gift card from San Diego Sewn Quilt Shop during the Kilber’s Raven week — such a treat!
Once I finish all the blocks, I’ll be sashing mine in light gray so my darker blocks really pop. Their example quilt uses dark sashing with light blocks, so mine will have the opposite look — can’t wait to see how it turns out!

⚙️ Steampunk Quilt – Next Up on the List
My Steampunk Quilt has been on pause while I finish up my Halloween projects, but I’m excited to get back to it soon.
The next pattern in my lineup is Infinity Dial from Pitcher’s Boutique Steampunk Patterns.
I love how creative these designs are, and the fabrics I’m using — Tim Holtz Eclectic Palettes — really capture that vintage, mechanical feel.
🪡 Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery BOM
The 2025 Designer Mystery Block of the Month from Fat Quarter Shop has been another highlight for me.
Block 4, Over the Moon by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life, is now complete — and I love how it turned out!
These blocks are my “comfort sewing” projects: straightforward, satisfying, and beautifully coordinated.
I’ve even started using my extra fabric to make bonus blocks from the Celebrate with Quilts book by Lissa Alexander and Susan Ache — they’re turning into a fun scrappy companion quilt.
🪡 Want to join in next year?
You can already Preorder the 2026 Designer Mystery BOM — Fat Quarter Shop’s kits always sell out quickly, so don’t wait too long!
Now for my favorite new project — the Halloween Party Quilt by Marcia Layton Designs.
I found this pattern at a quilt show in The Villages, Florida, and it was love at first sight.
What makes it so special is the interactive 3D design — the tree, fence, and background are pieced and quilted, while all the other elements (like pumpkins, ghosts, and candy corns) hang from the quilt using buttons and elastic loops!
🧵 Fabrics I Used:
This pattern is so fun to personalize — I added rickrack, ribbons from Michael’s, and even a few hot-glued embellishments.
Each hanging piece (like the witch’s hat, broom, and candy bag) is fused onto stiff interfacing, appliquéd, and finished with elastic loops on the back for easy hanging.
It’s creative, whimsical, and such a joy to make. I plan to hang mine on my door this Halloween!
Here’s what’s coming up next in my quilting queue:
-
Finish and assemble the Nocturnal Soul QAL
-
Quilt and embellish my Halloween Party quilt
-
Get back to the Steampunk Quilt
-
Bind my long-awaited Dear Jane quilt (finally!)
Plus, I’ll have a new unboxing video soon — including the goodies I picked out with my San Diego Sewn gift card.
