We’re here to guide you through every step of the process. My video tutorial gives you a visual guide in created the templates for this block.
Step 1 – Assemble the Background of the Block
Now that you have cut the necessary pieces from your fabrics, let’s start assembling the background. Begin by placing piece A at the center of one side of piece B, aligning the right sides together. Stitch them together and press the seam towards piece A. Repeat this process on the opposite side of piece B. Once these two pieces are sewn and pressed, replicate the same steps to attach the remaining two A pieces. Following this process will result in a 12 1/2″ square background block.

Step 3 – Transfer C & D templates to Fabric
Now, take the templates C & D that you crafted following the rotary cutting instructions and transferred to the fusible webbing. If you’re using Steam a Seam 2, transfer the templates onto the gridded side of the fusible webbing. Proceed by peeling off the plain side paper and affixing it to the back side of the fabric. Place the D template on the fabric matching the center square of the background block, and position the C template on the fabric corresponding to the corners of the background block.
Once the fusible is securely attached to the back of the fabrics, iron for no more than 3 seconds to adhere the glue to the fabric. Following this, we will cut the pieces along the lines of our tracings. There will be four pieces from each of the C & D templates.
Step 4 – Add the C & D pieces to the Background Block
Now, we are prepared to attach our pieces to the background block. We’ll begin with the C pieces, which are destined for the center square. Identify the midpoint on each side of the square in the center, marking it with either removable markings or a pin. Initially, lay out the pieces with the paper still on, aligning the pointed end of the C pieces with the center markings to create a design that corresponds to the block design.
Once satisfied with the arrangement, peel the paper from the back of each piece and carefully place them in position, matching points and center marks. Steam a Seam is repositionable if adjustments are needed. When you are happy with the placement, follow the instructions to fuse the pieces to the background block.

Moving forward, let’s incorporate the D pieces into the corners of the background block. Once more, align a point on the D piece with the center marking, and then align the opposite point so that it points toward the corner. Ensure that Piece D is positioned 1/4″ from the outside of the block to account for the seam allowance, and be mindful not to sew through the piece when attaching the block to other blocks.
Similarly to the C pieces, peel the paper from the back of each D piece, place it on the fabric, reposition if necessary, and iron according to the fusible instructions when you are satisfied with the placement. This step completes the addition of the D pieces to the corners of the background block.
