Step 2 – Make the Flying Geese
Note that 5 of the flying geese will have 2 pieces of the same color and 11 will be one piece each. All the corners and the center square are the same color. Make all the flying geese the same way with the color combinations noted in the pattern key. There will be 16 flying geese in this block. Mark all the B pieces with a diagonal, this will be the sewing line when lining the B piece with the A piece. Sew on the line and trim 1/4″ from the sewing line and iron towards the corner.
Step 3 – Assemble the Flying Geese Pieces
The flying geese will be put into two sets of 4 and 4 sets of two to prepare for the rows in the this block. Assemble the sets as noted below with the fabric numbers representing where to place the flying geese in each set. You are free to place the flying geese in any arrangement you like! Iron in the direction of the arrows.
Next we need to arrange our pieces to start putting our rows together. Below shows the arrangement of the rows and the arrows show which way to iron the seams of the flying geese sets to make the rows.
Step 4 – Assemble the Block
We are now ready to put the block together! This didn’t take long at all and we get a beautiful Purple Martin inspired block. Sew the rows together and iron in the direction of the arrows.
