Step 1 – Cut the Pieces

If you haven’t yet acquired the pattern, make your way to our free resource library and seize this opportunity. Immerse yourself in the splendid journey that draws inspiration from the captivating Indigo Bunting colors and the charm of the Hovering Hawks block.

Start by meticulously cutting out all the required pieces, ensuring that you mark your chosen colors accurately to achieve a flawless and stunning final design.

Equipped with your perfectly cut pieces, you’re now ready to embark on the creative process of crafting your October Purple Martin Flying Geese block. Return to this space as we guide you through each step of the assembly, ensuring that your quilting experience is as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

Step 2 – Make the Flying Geese

Note that 5 of the flying geese will have 2 pieces of the same color and 11 will be one piece each. All the corners and the center square are the same color. Make all the flying geese the same way with the color combinations noted in the pattern key. There will be 16 flying geese in this block. Mark all the B pieces with a diagonal, this will be the sewing line when lining the B piece with the A piece. Sew on the line and trim 1/4″ from the sewing line and iron towards the corner.

Put A and B right sides together, sew on the diagonal line, trim 1/4″ from the seam and iron towards the corner.

Repeat for the other side.

Step 3 – Assemble the Flying Geese Pieces

The flying geese will be put into two sets of 4 and 4 sets of two to prepare for the rows in the this block. Assemble the sets as noted below with the fabric numbers representing where to place the flying geese in each set. You are free to place the flying geese in any arrangement you like! Iron in the direction of the arrows.

Next we need to arrange our pieces to start putting our rows together. Below shows the arrangement of the rows and the arrows show which way to iron the seams of the flying geese sets to make the rows.

Step 4 – Assemble the Block

We are now ready to put the block together! This didn’t take long at all and we get a beautiful Purple Martin inspired block. Sew the rows together and iron in the direction of the arrows.
