Supplies
- Rotating Cutting Board (0ptional) – to help turn your pieces without touching them.
- Quilt ruler: Ensure you have a quilt ruler on hand, as it will help in drawing precise lines and measurements.
- Marking Pens – I like Frixion because they erase with heat.
Step 1 – Cut your Fabrics and Assemble the Flying Geese Blocks
Before progressing further, it’s crucial to possess precise cutting instructions. You can easily access these guidelines in our free resource library, a valuable collection of information. There, you’ll find the cutting instructions ready for your use.
Check out my video tutorial if you need help with cutting the pieces.
For the Flying Geese sections, Begin by marking the blue A pieces with a diagonal line. Place the A piece on the left side of the B piece, aligning them accurately. Sew on the marked line, trim the seam to 1/4″, and press the seam towards the corner. Repeat the process for the A piece on the other side of the Flying Geese unit.

Step 2 – Assemble the Star Block
Now that the flying geese units are done we can start assembling the Rows of the Star Block. Lay out your pieces like the diagram below. Sew the rows together and iron as the diagram indicates. The corner patches will be the remaining blue A pieces, and the center is the F piece.

Step 3 – Put the Stripe blocks together
Now we will put the strip blocks together. We will start with the 6 1/2″ strips which there are 2 white and 1 orange. Sandwich the orange in between the two white strips and sew at a 1/4″ seam and iron the seams towards the red strip.

Next we will do the same thing with the 12 1/2″ strips, except we will sandwich the white strip between the two orange strips. Sew at 1/4″ and iron towards the red strips.

Step 4 – Assemble the New York State block
Start with the star block and the 6 1/2″ strip block. Line the strip block up next to the star block, matching ends and edges. There are no seams to match here. Sew at 1/4″ and iron towards the strip block.
Finally, we can add the 12 1/2″ strip block to the bottom of our star unit. Match ends and edges and sew at 1/4″ seam and iron towards the bottom strip unit.
