You can access the cutting directions and templates for this block below and let’s dive in! The pattern includes rotary cutting instructions and templates if you choose to print the pattern.

Gather the necessary supplies:

  • Rotating Cutting Board (0ptional) – to help turn your pieces without touching them.
  • Quilt ruler: Ensure you have a quilt ruler on hand, as it will help in drawing precise lines and measurements.
  • Marking Pens – I like Frixion because they erase with heat.

Step 1 – Prepare the Pieces

Before progressing further, it’s crucial to possess precise cutting instructions. You can easily access these guidelines in our free resource library, a valuable collection of information. There, you’ll find the cutting instructions ready for your use.

Once all the pieces are meticulously prepared, come back to this point for the next phase of assembling the block.

Step 2 – May the Hourglass Blocks

Let’s dive into creating the hourglass block, which comes in two variations. We’ll start with the version composed of smaller segments forming a triangle. To begin with the first type of hourglass block, gather pieces C, F, and J. Arrange the C pieces adjacent to the J piece to shape a triangle. Take a C piece and align it with J, ensuring their right angles match. Secure the side you intend to sew with a pin, then stitch along this edge, finally pressing the seam towards the C piece. Repeat this process for the second C piece. This step yields two distinct color schemes, as illustrated in the diagram below, and ultimately results in four newly formed triangles for each color scheme.

With our collection of triangles complete, we’re ready to assemble the two distinct hourglass blocks. Arrange the recently crafted triangles according to the diagram below, positioning the green F pieces to shape the hourglass motif. Additionally, take the remaining F pieces and lay them out to fashion the second hourglass unit. Sew these pieces together in halves, pressing the seams towards the green F piece. Once both halves are prepared, combine them and press the resulting unit to a single side. Make 4 of each hourglass unit.

Step 3 – Make the Center Unit

For the center unit, we’ll employ pieces G and K. Begin by ensuring that a diagonal line is drawn on the back of all G pieces. Next, place two G pieces right sides together in diagonally opposite corners of the K piece. Ensure that the drawn line on the G pieces aligns in a way that it cuts off the corner. Stitch along this drawn line, trim the seam allowance to 1/4″, and then press the seam towards the G piece. Repeat this procedure with the remaining two G pieces, positioning them in the other two corners of the K piece.

Step 4 – Create the Final Two Sections

In this step, we’ll form the final two units. For the first unit, gather the E and H pieces, while for the second unit, you’ll need the A, D, and I pieces. Arrange the two units according to the layout depicted below.

Unit 1: A, D, and I

  • Stitch together the D and I pieces, ironing towards the D piece.
  • Once the D/I section is ready, sew it to the A piece, pressing the seam towards the A piece.
  • Make 4

Unit 2: E and H

  • Sew the two E pieces together, pressing the seam towards the darker side.
  • Attach the E section to the H piece, ironing towards the H piece. Make 4.

Step 5 – Arranging and Assembling the Block

Arrange all the pieces as indicated below.

Iron each row according to the indicated direction of the arrows.

After arranging and pressing the rows, proceed to sew all the rows together. When sewing the rows, press the seams away from the center of the block. This will help maintain the block’s alignment and give it a polished finish.
