Our attention is directed today towards the captivating state of Massachusetts, where history and imagination come together to bring forth the Massachusetts State Quilt Block. This exquisite pattern draws inspiration from the grace of the mayflower, Massachusetts’ cherished state flower. As we delve into crafting this block, it’s important to remember that there are a total of 56 – 1″ finished half square triangles, making this truly a block that requires dedication and care. Throughout this guide, I’ll walk you through the process of creating a half square triangle (HST) and also introduce you to a tool that aids in paper piecing these HSTs. While I’ll ultimately be utilizing the tool, it’s worth noting that this block can still be constructed without the need for printing or purchasing any additional tools.
As you embark on crafting this block, keep in mind that it’s not just a standalone masterpiece; it’s a crucial component of a larger puzzle that, when combined, forms a complete quilt radiating the natural beauty of Massachusetts’ landscape. You can access the cutting directions and templates for this block below and let’s dive in! The pattern includes rotary cutting instructions and templates if you choose to print the pattern.
Gather the necessary supplies:
- Rotating Cutting Board (0ptional) – to help turn your pieces without touching them.
- Quilt ruler: Ensure you have a quilt ruler on hand, as it will help in drawing precise lines and measurements.
- Marking Pens – I like Frixion because they erase with heat.
- 1″ Finished Triangles on a Roll (Optional) – Paper piecing the HST’s is an option!
Step 1 – Prepare the Pieces
Before progressing further, it’s crucial to possess precise cutting instructions. You can easily access these guidelines in our free resource library, a valuable collection of information. There, you’ll find the cutting instructions ready for your use.
Once all the pieces are meticulously prepared, come back to this point for the next phase of assembling the block.
Step 2 – Make the HST’s
Traditional Method
In this step, we’ll delve into creating the HSTs. I’ll be demonstrating two techniques for this process. The first is the conventional method, while the second involves paper piecing, which I personally find preferable due to its precision.
For the traditional HST approach, start by marking the 28 pieces of light color “B” fabric along the diagonal. Pair up the light and dark “B” pieces with their right sides facing each other. Sew a 1/4″ seam on both sides of the drawn diagonal line. Once done, cut along the diagonal line you’ve drawn and press the seams toward the dark fabric.
Keep in mind that you’ll obtain a yield of 56 HSTs by following these steps.

Paper Piece Method
For the paper piecing method of crafting the HSTs, I employed the 1″ finished Triangles on a Roll from It’s Sew Emma. This roll conveniently produces 630 HSTs, allowing you to utilize 2.5″ wide fabric strips of any length. The process is straightforward: take your 2.5″ fabric strips, align them with their right sides together, and then secure them by either pinning or clipping them to the back of the paper. The paper features dotted lines accompanied by arrows. Your task is to sew along these dotted lines, adhering to the arrow directions. Once all the dotted lines are sewn, you can proceed to cut along the solid lines. Afterward, iron your HSTs onto the dark fabric. This method ensures the creation of impeccable 1.5″ unfinished half square triangles.

By following this approach, you’ll be able to achieve HSTs that are precisely tailored to your project’s specifications.
Step 3 – Put the HST’s into rows.
At this stage, we’ll assemble the HSTs into rows, organizing them into groups of 10 and 4. For the rows containing 10 HSTs, it’s important to note their orientation. Two of these rows should have the light color triangle pointing towards the upper right corner, while the other two rows will feature the light color triangle pointing towards the upper left corner. Similarly, the rows comprising 4 HSTs will follow the same orientation pattern, with two rows of each orientation
Remember to press all your HSTs in the direction of the dark-colored triangles, ensuring a neat and cohesive appearance. To assist you further, refer to the provided diagram for clear guidance on both orientation and ironing techniques.

Step 4 – Crafting the Center Block
In this phase, we’ll focus on creating the central block. You’ll require the pieces labeled as “F,” “A,” and the rows of 4 HSTs. Let’s begin by placing the “F” piece at the center. On both the right and left sides of the “F” piece, position a row of HSTs. It’s essential to maintain the same orientation for the HST rows on both sides, as illustrated in the provided diagram.
Proceed to arrange the other two rows of 4 HSTs. These rows will be flanked by the “A” pieces. Align the dark-colored “A” piece next to a light triangle and place the light “A” piece beside a dark triangle. With this layout in place, sew the components together. When ironing, direct the seams towards the “A” pieces and the “F” piece.

Next we will put the three rows together and iron towards the Row with the F piece.

Step 5 – Adding the Strip Rows to the Center Block
Moving forward, we’ll incorporate the two strip rows into the central block, which will require the C, D, and E pieces. Here’s a detailed guide on how to proceed:
- Attaching the E Pieces: Start by attaching the two E pieces to the center block. Align them carefully and stitch them in place. As you press the seams, ensure they are directed towards the E pieces. This step contributes significantly to building the structure and dimension of the block.
- Working with the D Pieces: Now, turn your attention to the D pieces. Take the D pieces that share the same color as the E pieces and attach them to the remaining two sides of the center block. As before, press the seams towards the D pieces to create a neat and smooth finish.
- Repeat for Remaining C & D Pieces: To continue the process, repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the remaining C and D pieces of the same color. This repetition ensures consistency and uniformity throughout the block’s design. By mirroring these actions, you’ll maintain the balanced appearance of the quilt block while advancing towards its final stages of assembly.

Step 6 – Completing the Block!
In this final step, we’ll bring the block to completion by adding the four rows of 10 HSTs to the outer section of the previously constructed block. Follow these instructions to finalize the block’s assembly:
- Incorporating the Remaining A Pieces: Begin by attaching the remaining A pieces to both sides of two rows of HSTs that have the same orientation. Pay close attention to ensure that the correct color A piece is placed in the right position for each row. Refer to the provided diagram for clear guidance on the arrangement.
- Adding Additional HST Rows: Next, attach the other two rows of HSTs to the block we’ve built so far. When sewing, direct the seams towards the C or D strips.
- Completing the Last Two Rows: Finally, add the last two rows of HSTs to the opposite side of the block. Make sure to position them neatly next to any seams, then sew and press the seams towards the C or D strips.

Congratulations!
