Now that you have all your pieces ready, you’re all set to start crafting your July Oriole Duck Tails block. Come back here where we’ll guide you step-by-step through the assembly process.

Step 2: Building the Flying Geese Units

To ensure flawless color coordination, we recommend building one quarter of the block at a time. Let’s dive into the process and start by crafting the Flying Geese units – a vital element of this stunning block.

In this step, we’ll focus on constructing the Flying Geese units for each quarter of the Oriole Duck Tails block. The diagrams provided will guide you through the process, and we’ll use letters and numbers to match the pieces correctly. So, let’s get started!

    Marking the A Pieces
Begin by marking 1/2 of the A pieces of each color with a diagonal line. These marked A pieces will be used in the Flying Geese units, ensuring the perfect blend of colors in your block. Take note of which color corresponds to each side of the Flying Geese unit for a seamless design.

    Assembling the Flying Geese Units
Place the appropriate A piece on the left side of the corresponding B piece, aligning them accurately. Sew on the marked line, trim the seam to 1/4″, and press the seam towards the corner. Repeat the process for the A piece on the other side of the Flying Geese unit.

Step 3 – building the Quarter Block

Please follow the diagrams below for all four quarters to know how to put your colors in each quarter together. Note that the quarter numbers are in the captions.

For each quarter above, the seams and ironing direction will be the same. Follow the arrows for each of the quarters that are constructed above.

    Laying Out the Quarter Block
Take your completed Flying Geese units and lay them out according to the diagram provided below. Match the letters and numbers with the fabrics you’ve chosen, ensuring a seamless blend of colors in your block. This thoughtful arrangement will bring out the charm of orioles and create a visually stunning quilt block.

    Sewing the Pieces Together
With the pieces laid out correctly, it’s time to sew them together row by row. Start by stitching the pieces in the top row together, carefully matching the seams for a neat finish. Continue with the second and third rows until all pieces are securely sewn together.

Pressing in the Direction of Arrows
After sewing each row, iron the seams in the direction of the arrows as indicated in the diagram. This pressing technique will help your seams lie flat and create a smoother quilt block.

Step 4 – Assemble the Block

    Arranging the Quarters

Lay out the four quarters you’ve created as shown in the diagram below. Match the colors, ensuring that the hues of orioles come together harmoniously in your completed block. This careful arrangement will highlight the beauty of the Duck Tails design.

    Sewing the Block Together

Start by sewing the pieces within each row together. Carefully stitch along the seams, making sure the points and colors align seamlessly. After sewing each row, iron the seams in the direction of the arrows indicated in the diagram. This step will ensure your quilt block lays flat and looks polished.

    Completing the Block

With all rows ironed and neatly aligned, it’s time to sew the two rows together. Carefully match the seams and colors as you sew the rows together. Once again, press the final seam in one direction to create a smooth finish for your July Oriole Duck Tails block.
