This exquisite quilt block have a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. It was initially featured in the publication “Hearth and Home,” where individuals from various states sent in their unique quilt block designs. Today, we will delve into the distinct charm of Oklahoma State Quilt Block, focusing specifically on the incorporation of points and arcs in milk and strawberry colors.

One remarkable aspect of these quilt blocks is their color palette, which draws inspiration from Oklahoma’s state drink, milk, and its state fruit, strawberries. I have a detailed video also on how to make the templates for this quilt block and you can find it here:

    Cut Your Pieces out

Once your templates are made or you have cut them out, make sure to get the pieces cut from your fabrics. There are two fabrics in this block, and I have made not in the cutting directions how many pieces from each fabric you will need.

Note that this block is constructed in quarters. All quarters are built exactly the same, but two corners have a light color scheme and the other two have an opposite dark color scheme.

I laid out my pieces so that I was building all four quarters at the same time. Make sure that you have the colors in your piles in the right order though!

There will be 2 colorways of this layout, to make 4 quarters.

    Start with Pieces D & C

Grab your pieces D & C and lay them out so they make a square. Put the long sides together so that there are 1/4″ tails and sew together. Iron towards piece C. May 2 of each of the colorways as noted below.

    Next We Put Together B, G & H Together

Lay out the B, G & H Pieces so that they look like the diagrams below. There will be two different layouts and colorways for these pieces!

Start wit the B piece and add G right sides together so that there is a 1/4″ G tail over the B piece. This will ensure a straight edge when ironed. Sew and iron towards B.

Next add the H piece making sure that the H point at the top is level with the B point at the top and this will help to keep the top pieces straight across. Sew and iron towards H.

Add your J piece to one side from the above pieces we just made. The J piece will be the same color as the H piece, sew and iron towards J.

    Assemble the inner block

Take the short B/G/H pieces you have remaining and add them to the top of the C/D pieces from one of the first steps above. No seams to match, sew and iron towards the C/D piece.

You will have 4 pieces of two colorways like below.

No add the strip with the J piece on it to the left of the above pieces, nesting seams, sewing and ironing towards the strip with the J piece.

You will have 2 of each of the below colorways.

    Add the Corner A Piece

Now we can add the corner A piece. Fold A and mark the center in the arc, and fold the block you just made and mark the center in the J piece. Clip the arc on the A piece (1/8″ clips) and match the centers. Pin the center and use your clipped A piece to maneuver the fabric around the curve of J. Pin to each edge and sew and iron towards the corner A piece.

Make 2 or each colorway below.

    Assemble the Block!

Now we can layout the four quarters so that the matching corners are in opposite corners of the block. Sew in rows, iron towards the corners with the dark edges. Next put the rows together nesting and lining up seams, sew and iron in one directions.
