We are introducing the West Virginia block! In 1912 Hearth and Home solicited quilters to submit a quilt block that they thought represented their State, and they then published them and I am recreating these blocks for us to make!
National West Virginia Day is Wednesday March 22, 2023! I am going to try to release the State blocks on their National day throughout 2023!
I have deconstructed this block so that it is all familiar quilting shapes and no Y seams! The key to this block is to use fabric that hides the seams, so that the color shapes really come through. This block is 12.5″ and I made it in the colors of the State Flower – Rhododendron.

Supplies
- Three Fabric Colors for this block, contrasting enough that all elements of the block stand apart.
- Rulers large enough to cut the pieces.
- Chain Piece cutter is optional
- Rotary blade
- Thread – I used Aurifil Thread 50wt.
- Iron – I have a cordless iron that makes it easy to iron next to my machine.
Step 1 – Make the HST’s
- Make 2 – Fabric 1 & 2 (A), sew and iron towards the dark fabric
- Make 1 – Fabric 2 & 3 (A), sew and iron towards the dark fabric
- Make 1 – Fabric 1 & 3 (A), sew and iron towards the dark fabric

Step 2 – Cut the (B) & (D) pieces.
The (B) & (D) pieces will be cut the same except there will be a right and left.
B will be the left and (D) will be the right.
To cut the (B) pieces. Measure 3/4″ from the top left corner over and make a mark. Next cut on the diagonal from the mark to the bottom right corner.
To cut the (D) pieces. Measure 3/4″ from the top right corner over and make a mark. Next cut on the diagonal from the mark to the bottom left corner.

Add Fabric 3 (A) to the left cuts and the right cuts to, sew and iron towards (A). Trim unit to 2 1/8” wide x 1 7/8” high.

Step 3 – Layout the quarter block and assemble.
Layout the block as seen below. Make 4 identical quarter blocks.
