Learn to make the Birds Nest Quilt Block in Hummingbird Colors for our Birds of a Feather QAL. This release is for February 2023!
I am starting a series of blocks for 2023 that will end up being a sampler quilt at the end of the year! All the blocks are going to a version of a bird named quilt block, and the color will be themed from a different bird each month. My inspiration comes from the Fat Quarter Shop Solid of the Month Club. They are theming their club after the Birds of America for 2023 and this inspired me to find quilt blocks that have bird names!

February is our second month and the bird is Hummingbird! Of course, you don’t need to use the solid of the month club for your blocks, you can use scraps or go and find your favorite hummingbird colors to build this block. The block is the birds nest block, this is a more complicated block, but don’t let it scare you away! It lends itself nicely to the colors of a hummingbird. You can find our January Blue Jay Block over here – https://bit.ly/3GGaRJT

I have sashing around all the blocks with a triangle that points towards the block. The sashing in my quilt is a beige essex linen, and the triangles are going to be from that month’s fat quarters. So each block will have different color triangles in the sashing.
Before we get started, I have a pattern with all the cutting and construction instructions in my Free Pattern Resource Library. The pattern will get guide you through the cuts and how to put the pieces together to make this beautiful block. Click the link below to get the password if you haven’t already!
Step 1 – Cut the Pieces
Cut your pieces according to the pattern. Make sure that you keep your pieces organized by letter, but then by color. I have numbered my colors, and keep the numbers on each of my colors and then refer to the the Key Block to make sure I get the right colors in the right place! I used Alphabitties with numbers and letters to keep track of my cuts and fabrics.
Step 2 – Build the Corners
All seams will be a skant 1/4″ because almost every edge we are working with will be a bias edge. Seams will be ironed open unless otherwise noted.
Sew an A10 to an A12 to make an HST. Sew and A10 and A11 to make an HST.

Add and A10 to one side of the A12, iron towards A10. Add and A10 to the other side of A12, iron towards A10. Repeat for the A10/A11 HST.

To complete the corners, add a C5 and C7 to the A10/A12 corners, and a C6 and C8 to the A10/A11 corners. Unfinished unit will be 5 1/2″ square.

Step 3 – Center Square
Add a D2 to opposite sides of E1, Repeat for the other two D2 pieces and the others sides of E1. Center Square is complete. Unfinished square is 2.5″.

Step 4 – Build Inner Rows
Add B3 to the left side B9.

Add a B9 to the left of E4 and then a B10 to the right of E4.

Add a B10 to the left of E2 and then a D9 to the right of E2.

Add a D9 to the bottom of the unit you just made.

Complete the inner row by matching seams. Completed inner row will be 5 1/2 x 2 1/2″

Step 5 – Assemble the Block!
Lay out your assemble pieces per the diagram below. This now is a 9 patch. Assemble the rows vertically, match points on the inner rows and center block. Match seams or points where necessary.

Add the rows together, matching the seams of the inner rows and the center square. Your Hummingbird Block is complete! Your unfinished block will be 12.5″ square.
