WOW! Spooky Sampler Quilt Spider Webs and Witches Hats

It is Week 4 of the Spooky Sampler Quilt Sew Along and we are doing spider webs and witches hats this week!

Pat Sloan is doing a YouTube quilt along and Melissa Mortenson at Polkdotchair.com.  The pattern is by Melissa Mortensen and features Traditional Piecing & Raw Edge Applique with fun and traditional Halloween features.  The pattern comes is a super cute box with all the fabrics by Riley Black called Spooky Hollow!

This week Pat Sloan is doing the the pieced spider webs and witches hats. The witches hats are put together very similar to the brooms from week 2.

Melissa provides the templates for the top of the witches hat and the ribbon around the hat. She also provides templates of the triangles needed to cut the small and large spider webs.

I made a video of putting together week 4 and you can watch it here:

The pattern is very easy to read, she breaks down how all the fabrics are to be cut and how they are to be pieced. The instructions for both of these blocks are very easy to read and the templates are provided.

Witches Hat Blocks

First I cut all the pieces for the witches hat (I forgot the brim of the hat, I cut that later). The top of the hat and the ribbon are then sewn together.

Secondly, we have to put the background on the hat and even though it looks difficult, she explains it very well how to make the background and square it off so that we can proceed with the bottom part of the block

The pattern tells us what size to cut the upper portion of the the block, which is 7 1/2″ high x 12 1/2″ wide.

The top of my hat is not the top of the block which was a little disappointing because the drawing in the instructions who the top of the hat as the top of the block. I cut it to the size she said to though so it has to be right!

Lastly was to attach the brim of the hat and the bottom piece of background and we are done with this block! This block didn’t take very long to make.

Spider Web Blocks

The second block this week was to make the large and small spider webs! I have never made a block like this and it seemed intimidating, but with her instructions it was not hard at all!

First item up for the web, you cut 2 light strips and 2 dark strips and sew them together alternately. I then took my triangle template and cut 8 blocks from each of the strips I created. The triangles will be cut by flipping it 180 degrees after each cut. This is how we get the alternating colors in the web.

Next up is to cut 8 triangles, then we will sew 4 of the triangles together, which will created a 1/2 circle and then we will sew the two halves together!

We now need to attach the background pieces so that we can square off our web. In the photo below you can where I attached the background pieces and then centered and cut my block to be 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ square.

So finally, the purple web is put together exactly like the large black/gray web and we will square this one off at 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, To make this block fit with the others it will have a border around it

We are now finished with week 4 of the Spooky Sampler Quilt Along! Let me know if you are working on this and how it is going for you!
